Valley of loneliness viewed from afar

June 24, 2008

This poem struck me today, even though it is not what I’m living right now. Poems like this are important, even when viewed from outside the valley itself:

Loneliness is like a piano without keys,
Like a violin without strings.
Like a sanctuary without a congregation
Or a choir where no one sings.
Loneliness is like a blade of grass
Growing through a crack of cement.
Loneliness is like a campground
Without a single tent.
Loneliness is like a mockingbird
That cannot sing a song.
Loneliness is a feeling
That one does not belong.
Like a pansy in a cornfield
Hidden where no one can see.
I know all there is to know about loneliness
Because it lives inside of me.

Walk visually through the poem above and feel the emotion of the author and the hollowness that is portrayed. These verses may or may not resound with the tune of your heart at this moment, but there is most assuredly someone close to you who is walking through a valley like this.

God, in His great wisdom, did not place us here on earth in a vacuum. Instead, he placed others around us so that we may comfort, love, and live in fellowship with each other. And infinitely more significant than the other humans that God placed around us, He sent His Son, Jesus, to be our Savior and Friend, and His Holy Spirit to be our Comforter.

None of us want to spend much time in the valley of loneliness, but the truth is that sometimes we must go through these seasons. Be on the lookout for those around you who are there. We see it everyday… in their actions, in their posture, in their eyes. Give them the gift of your love, but more importantly, share with them the gift of their Savior, and open the door to a friend that will prevent loneliness – not just for this life, but for eternity to come.
